Meet Jenna, Our Nurse Practitioner

At Renewed Vitality, we strive to provide the highest-quality hormone replacement therapy (HRT) options and other treatments from the most-qualified and passionate professionals in the Berks County area. That’s why we are proud to introduce Jenna Lee, our new Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner!

As a facility with a growing number of patients and staff members, we think it’s important to understand and appreciate every person’s role toward helping men and women lead their healthiest lives. To get a better understanding of a nurse practitioner’s role and a few details about Jenna’s background, let’s take a closer look at what these necessary professionals offer to improve every person’s life who walks through our doors.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are sought after in just about every area of healthcare, including at our treatment center. NPs are also necessary educators at the university level, sometimes called nurse educators, and can also be directly involved in policy work.

Usually, an NP will earn a Master of Science in Nursing with a specific population focus, such as family medicine or gerontology. They are also required to pass a national certification exam before applying for state licensure. Essentially, wherever healthcare decisions are required, nurse practitioners provide important insight and expertise.

Meeting Jenna Lee

Our own Jenna Lee graduated from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She went on to further her education too, graduating from The Pennsylvania State University with a Master of Science in Nursing. Her career in the medical field began in 2010 as a registered nurse, and she has been working as a nurse practitioner since 2015. She offers a variety of applicable expertise in the medical field, including family practice, transplant surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and long term care.

While her degree is in family medicine, Jenna always had an interest in women’s health in particular. After learning more about the team at Renewed Vitality and the care they provide, she knew this was a great opportunity and felt it was a perfect fit (and we agree!). Her favorite thing about working at Renewed Vitality is being an important member of a truly amazing team. Jenna considers it a blessing to be part of a company that feels like family. She also loves having the ability to truly help our patients change their lives for the better.

In terms of how Renewed Vitality impacts the lives of our patients, Jenna thinks our holistic approach is one of the key facets to ensuring quality care. Due to the sheer number of patients who tell us how drastically their lives have changed since initiating care with us, it’s no wonder she feels right at home. She considers it one of the most rewarding experiences when you’re told that you’ve helped someone to feel like themselves again.

More personally, Jenna shared that her husband, Jamieson, and she are the proud parents of 2 children: Grace and Caleb. When hard at work, Jenna loves being outdoors – hiking, kayaking, biking, and swimming are some of her favorite activities. She also enjoys cooking, baking, reading a good book, watching Phillies baseball games, taking road trips, and spending quality time with her family and friends.

Please welcome Jenna Lee to our wonderful team

With the new year comes new opportunities for growth and self-improvement, and this can even extend to improving the quality of your sex life. Whether you are in a relationship or single, there are many things you can do to enhance your sexual experiences and bring more excitement and pleasure into the bedroom.

A fulfilling sex life can improve overall intimacy and emotional connection with a partner, boost self-esteem and confidence, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase feelings of happiness and satisfaction in a relationship. Additionally, a healthy and active sex life can also bolster mental and physical health by reducing the risk of heart disease, improving sleep, and increasing longevity. Let’s explore some tips and techniques for improving your sex life in 2023!

Effectively Communicate With Your Partner

One of the most important steps toward a more satisfying and healthier sex life is improving how you communicate with your partner. Good communication is key to any successful relationship, and this is especially true when it comes to sex. Open and honest communication can help you understand each other’s desires, preferences, and boundaries, which will ultimately lead to better and more satisfying sexual experiences.

When communicating with your partner about sexual desires and preferences, try to approach conversations in a non-judgmental and respectful manner. Be sure to listen actively and be open to feedback, and remember that it is okay to have different opinions and preferences when it comes to sex. With the trust it takes to communicate and respect one another’s sexual dispositions and goals, it makes it easier to find areas where desires and preferences overlap.

Experiment & Try Out New Things

One of the ways to bring excitement and novelty into your sex life is to experiment with new sensations, experiences, and mindsets. This can include trying new positions, incorporating sex toys, or exploring different types of foreplay and afterplay. When experimenting with new things, it is important to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow. Be sure to communicate with your partner about what you are comfortable with, and remember that experimentation is not just about pleasing others, but also about finding what works best for you.

Focus on Foreplay

Foreplay is an often overlooked aspect of sexual encounters, but it is an important part of building sexual tension and enhancing pleasure. Foreplay can take many forms, including kissing, touching, and massaging, and it can be a great way to slow down and savor the sexual experience. When incorporating foreplay into your sexual experiences, prioritize listening to your partner’s cues and pay attention to their body language. Keep in mind that foreplay is not just about physical stimulation, but also about emotional and mental connection.

Practice Self-Care and Self-Exploration

Self-care and self-exploration are essential components of a healthy and fulfilling sex life. This can involve taking care of your physical and mental health, exploring your own desires and preferences, and learning how to pleasure yourself. You could experiment with different types of physical and emotional stimulation privately or with a partner – in general, don’t be afraid to try new things or explore your own body and preferences. When practicing self-care and self-exploration, be sure to prioritize your own needs and desires, and take the time to understand what turns you on and what doesn’t.

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Another lifestyle area that affects one’s libido is getting enough sleep. The release of hormones related to sexual function is regulated by the body’s circadian rhythm, and sleep patterns play a huge role in determining when these hormones are produced. Insufficient sleep can significantly reduce one’s libido. When individuals feel exhausted before even getting into bed, it can diminish any sexual drive they may have had prior. In addition, sufficient sleep can increase testosterone levels in men, and considering that low testosterone levels are often linked to sexual dysfunction, this further emphasizes the importance of being well-rested to engage in healthy and fun sexual activities.

Taking the time to improve your sex life will help you to better understand yourself and your partner by incorporating new techniques and practices that bring excitement and pleasure into the bedroom. Whether you are in a relationship or single, the above tips and techniques can help you enhance your sexual experiences and bring more joy and fulfillment into your life.

Additionally, at Renewed Vitality, we offer bioidentical hormone treatments that can help improve your sexual health. If you are looking to restore your energy levels and revitalize your sex life, supplementing with testosterone or estrogen may be the solution you need. To learn more about this treatment option, please reach out to us. We would be happy to help!

As January of 2023 comes to a close, it’s a great time to prioritize your mental health by celebrating the end of World Health Esteem Month. Around the globe, this month was dedicated to emphasizing the importance of having high self esteem in your everyday life. Which is not to say that self esteem is always easy to maintain or improve – quite the opposite is true for millions of people.

The great news is that everyone can boost their self esteem and mental wellbeing by practicing a few techniques that can help boost one’s sense of self respect and positivity about who you are. To honor the end of World Health Esteem month, let’s take a closer look at a few reliable ways to bolster your self esteem that you can use throughout the year.

Commit to Physical Activity

According to board-certified neurologist and psychiatrist Julia Samton, exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on self-esteem and life satisfaction. More specifically, NIH research strongly suggests that adults between the ages of 18 to 65 should strive to get either 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of challenging physical activity per week. For people who don’t have easy access to a gym, it’s still possible to achieve this by walking for 30 minutes daily, Monday through Friday. Essentially, adopting and maintaining a regular exercise routine into your daily life can help you to feel strong physically and mentally, providing you with lasting feelings of accomplishment and self-worth.

Appreciate Your Strengths

Having confidence in yourself and your abilities also supports your self esteem. When you know you’re good at something and have the ability to succeed, valuing yourself and supporting your sense of self worth becomes easier. Recognizing the strengths you have and your own passions is an essential part of building and maintaining your self esteem.

While many of us may lack the confidence to begin something new, it’s still necessary to get started to prove to yourself that you have what it takes to do it. Below are just a few ways to help identify your strengths and how to work towards them:

  • Commit time to identifying what you know your strengths are, even if you don’t feel like they’re developed enough. Write a list to visualize them to help motivate yourself toward making them even better.
  • You can also take an assessment from trusted others and ask them to list down the things they think your strengths are.
  • After making your list of strengths, make a list of the things you most-want to do or achieve, or even that simply interest you about work or life.
  • Go back to that list of your strengths that others think you have and consider how to match them with your interests. If there are some additional traits you need to develop to become more of a successful part of the things you’re interested in, this matching will help you know what you can work on to get closer to reaching your goals.

Understand & Accept Your “Flaws”

Every person on our planet has flaws, which is to say things we wish could change or want to improve on. But to prevent these “flaws” from taking over our self-esteem, it is essential to separate the “flaws” that can be improved from those that are unchangeable. With unchangeable “flaws,” there are really just two options: you dwell on them or you can find acceptance. By accepting unchangeable parts of yourself you can start moving beyond the confines of the negativity you associate with them, whether it be clinical depression or even low-self-esteem.

It’s important to note that accepting your flaws isn’t that same as convincing yourself to like them. It just means choosing to no longer let that which is unchangeable have control over you. For example, instead of resisting or feeling completely overwhelmed by negative thoughts or feelings, accept them. They may not be likable. But you should allow yourself to feel them. This sort of thought process will help you accept your greater value as a person. As your self-esteem increases, your confidence and sense of well-being will also continue to grow.

Prioritize Self Care

Incorporating self-care techniques into your life is another reliable and comforting way to boost your self-esteem. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, self-care prioritizes committing time to do things that help improve your quality of life, both for your physical health and mental health. In terms of mental health, self-care is a great way to help you manage stress, decrease your risk of illness, and improve your energy levels.

Self-care techniques include everything from maintaining a healthy and diverse diet, sticking to a regular sleeping schedule, including a relaxing activity in your daily routine, setting goals and priorities for yourself, and practicing gratitude by writing down the things you’re grateful for. Even small acts of self-care, like challenging your negative thought patterns with positive outlooks can have a substantial impact.

We’re also the center for the area’s best facility for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and other treatments. It’s a fact of life that things start to change drastically in your body as you age. Your joints get stiffer, your eyesight gets worse, and your hair turns gray. Some of the biggest changes, however, can come from changes in your hormonal levels as you age. These hormonal changes are called menopause for women and andropause for men. They can cause major effects in the body, not all of which are very pleasant, and occasionally these symptoms can get in the way of you living a full and healthy life as you get older. However, you don’t just have to suffer through it! Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, can be an effective treatment for the symptoms of menopause and andropause.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is the natural decline of reproductive hormone levels as a woman reaches her 40s and 50s, eventually leading to the complete stop of her menstrual cycle. Symptoms of a woman entering menopause can be things like hot flashes, chills, night sweats, mood changes, thinning hair, dry skin, vaginal dryness, and more. This is a natural occurrence in a woman’s life, but the symptoms can be difficult to cope with.

What is Andropause?

Andropause is the male counterpart to menopause– natural decline of reproductive hormone levels as a man ages. Its most common symptoms are fatigue and decreased libido, but other symptoms can include decreased muscle mass, mood changes, erectile dysfunction, depression, and other problems that can get in the way of you enjoying your life in and after middle age.

Replacement Hormones

To counteract the effects of menopause, a woman needs to increase her estrogen and progesterone levels. Estrogen does many things, including maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels, influencing how the body uses calcium and preventing osteoporosis, and maintaining a healthy vaginal environment. Progesterone regulates blood pressure and helps to improve mood and sleep.

Treating andropause with HRT requires testosterone. Among its many jobs, testosterone regulates sex drive, bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells.

How Can HRT Help?

Hormone replacement therapy seeks to add hormones back into your system to help boost your levels and alleviate your system. Replacement hormones can come in pill, patch, cream, gel, or spray form, or they can be given in suppository form or by subcutaneous delivery. By using natural, bioidentical hormones like the ones at Renewed Vitality, you can help to counteract the symptoms of menopause or andropause that you experience.

Hormone changes as you age can leave you uncomfortable, unhappy, and feeling like you’ve lost control of your body and your life. With hormone replacement therapy, you can have your life back again! If you’re interested in this form of treatment, be sure to contact Renewed Vitality today to get started.

While everyone’s body produces the natural hormone testosterone, it’s often associated and more highly concentrated in men. Essentially, testosterone is a hormone created predominately in the testicles and helps maintain your body’s healthy bone density, fat distribution, muscular strength and mass, facial and body hair, red blood cell production, sex drive, and sperm production.

As men age, testosterone levels naturally and slowly decline, which can worsen physiological conditions, general health levels, and quality of life. To help reduce the effects of decreased testosterone levels and negatively-correlated symptoms, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be a promising option. However, it’s important to note that  there are a lot of misconceptions about what the treatment can and can’t do for individuals.

Let’s take a closer look at what TRT is, its potential benefits, financial costs, and the types of TRT treatments that are commonly available.

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

TRT is a treatment that medical professionals often prescribe to men who have testosterone deficiency and are showing symptoms of hypogonadism. Getting prescription testosterone has been proven to help restore the levels of this hormone in the blood, reversing the symptoms of low testosterone. Many men who take it can notice improvements in alertness, sexual function, energy levels, mood, and more.

Medical professionals typically prescribe TRT to males who have hypogonadism. To get a definitive evaluation, blood tests must show that an individual has low testosterone levels, which the American Urological Association defines as being below 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl). Individuals usually have to also be experiencing other symptoms, including fatigue, breast growth, and sexual dysfunction.

If you are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, you likely don’t feel as good as you should. Beyond day-to-day symptoms, low levels of testosterone can also impact your body’s ability to carry out critical functions, which can increase your risk for other serious health concerns, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms do vary for each person, but if you experience several or all of the symptoms below, it’s worth getting your T levels checked:

  • Decreased muscular strength and stamina
  • Low sex drive
  • Erectile difficulties
  • Diminished sperm volume
  • Unusual weight gain or body fat redistribution
  • Changes in Mood

How Much Does TRT Cost?

For most patients, TRT doesn’t have to be very costly. Additionally, the majority of health insurance companies cover a wide range of testosterone replacement therapy forms, which means you’ll. Co-pays can range anywhere from $30-$100 per month, depending on your location, treatment schedule, and insurance plan. Generic options also help reduce out-of-pocket expenses for TRT.

Without insurance, TRT injections are usually the least costly type and can range from $50 to $100 per month. Solutions in the form of gels, creams, and patches usually range between $200 and $500 per month.

TRT is a great option for restoring and bolstering your overall health, wellness, and sense of well being. But remember that costs and types of treatment may vary depending on your needs. Be sure to consult with your primary doctor to figure out the best methods for TRT for you.

Is TRT Right for You?

If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, be sure to consult with your primary care physician. A healthcare professional can detail the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy, any potential risks, and work with you to formulate a treatment plan.

The official U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does warn about the potential risk of heart attacks and strokes for some individuals receiving TRT (FDA, 2018). Testosterone treatment can also have side effects like infertility. Additionally, it may not be a good solution for you if you have certain medical conditions, such as prostate cancer

At Renewed Vitality, we always strive to give patients the most natural results possible with the least amount of side effects. That’s why every hormone replacement treatment option we offer, including those for testosterone replacement therapy, uses bioidentical hormones. To better consider your potential TRT treatment options, contact us today to get started!

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has become a widely-debated topic and technique, usually used for treating symptoms of menopause. With ongoing medical research, it’s become clear that HRT can help many women and men with safe, effective hormone imbalance treatment options across all stages of life.

While HRT can reduce or eliminate hormonal imbalance issues, many people don’t take advantage of HRT  due to a decades-old study that warned of serious health risks. Although the medical research and opinions on hormones have changed for the better, many men and women are understandably still cautious and hesitant. Let’s take a closer look at what HRT is and the benefits it can provide toward bolstering your or a loved one’s quality of life.

What Is HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy is often used to relieve the common symptoms of menopause, but more generally can treat hormone imbalances for both men and women. HRT treatments provide hormones that replace those your body either doesn’t produce or only does so in more limited quantities.

HRT is often a good treatment option for hot flashes, bone loss, vaginal dryness, and low estrogen levels. Importantly, the kind of hormone therapy a given person needs, the right dosage, and the risks will vary. Be sure to talk to your doctor before choosing hormone therapy to consider if the benefits outweigh any potential risks for you.

For women, HRT is used to provide the estrogen your body no longer makes after menopause. There are two primary types of estrogen therapy:

  • Systemic HRT: Systemic estrogen — which arrives in the form of a pill, skin patch, ring, gel, cream, or spray form — usually offers a higher dose of estrogen that gets absorbed throughout the body.
  • Low-dose products: Products with low-dose vaginal estrogen benefits usually come in tablet, ring, or cream form. They minimize how much of the hormone gets absorbed by the body. As a result, these low-dose vaginal preparations are usually used only to treat the vaginal and urinary symptoms of menopause.

HRT Benefits & Options

The last few decades have provided hundreds of clinical studies with outcomes that support using HRT to effectively help conditions like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, and bone loss. These benefits can lead to improved sleep, and sexual relations, and quality of life.

Authors of Estrogen Matters, Oncologist Avrum Bluming and social psychologist Carol Tavris have helped clarify some of the misunderstandings surrounding hormone therapy and the important advantages it can provide men and women. “Our goal in writing the book and subsequently answering the dozens of emails we receive from around the world is to [educate about] the role of estrogen in ameliorating symptoms and prolonging women’s lives,” Bluming says.

At Renewed Vitality, we strive to give HRT patients the most natural results possible with the least amount of side effects. That’s why every hormone replacement treatment technique we offer uses bioidentical hormones.

Different from lab-produced synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are created from plant-based sources that are biologically identical to what our human bodies produce. This makes them easier for your body to use, providing fewer and less severe side effects than the synthetic versions. If you do decide that HRT may be a good treatment for you, be sure to call your doctor first to make sure you’re a good candidate.

We offer a wide range of methods for replacing  your body’s previous hormone production with bioidentical hormone options. A hormone replacement therapy center like Renewed Vitality can help you feel better with bioidentical hormone treatments to get your body producing the levels it needs. Don’t hesitate to discover your options by contacting us to get started! To stay up to date with the latest HRT research and treatments, keep reading out blog here at Renewed Vitality!

Everything changes when you become a parent. Suddenly your whole entire life revolves around a new little person, and there is so much joy in watching them grow and develop. However, as any veteran parent will tell you, there are drawbacks as well. One of those drawbacks often comes in the form of dramatic changes in how you and your partner experience intimacy together.

Between physical and hormonal changes after the birth of a child and changes in your schedule, energy levels, and relationship as your child grows up, having a fulfilling sex life with your partner can become a challenge. This can put a lot of strain on your relationship and your own personal happiness, but it doesn’t need to be this way! Your sex life can survive parenthood if you are willing to make changes in your approach to intimacy and work together to continue to make it a priority in your lives. The first step is knowing what to expect and creating a plan for how to change things going forward, so here’s what you need to know!

What Changes?

Hormones and Physical Changes

This is very important particularly for anyone who has just given birth, but a parent who did not give birth also experiences a rush of new hormones as they bond with their baby! The human body is biologically hardwired to care for newborns, and during the early stages when you’re adjusting to the new baby and your body might still be healing from delivery, it’s very normal for one or both partners to have a low interest in sex, and it’s important to set your own timeline and get back into things when both partners feel ready

Time

If you don’t know it yet, you certainly will soon– kids are a lot of work, and time you once had available to spend with your partner will now be dedicated to them. This change in your schedule can lead to the simple logistical problem of having less time for intimacy, and finding a moment to spend with your partner can become a lot more difficult than it ever was before.

Environment

Where sex and intimacy were likely once spontaneous and easy in your life, you now have to worry about upset kids who want to sleep in your bed, toys on the sofa, dishes in the sink, and many other distractions and stressors in your physical environment that are competing for your attention, making it hard to find a time and place to engage with each other.

What to Do?

Have a Conversation

If you and your partner are going to get through this together, it’s crucial that you prioritize open and honest communication around your sex life. Sit down together and talk about what you’re feeling comfortable with, what your needs are, and where your head is at. Many parents who aren’t the primary caregiver can feel neglected by their partner, and many parents who are the primary caregiver can struggle with low libido as their entire life and body becomes dedicated to taking care of kids. Being honest about these feelings with each other will help you to grow understanding for yourself and your partner.

Make Plans

Just like you schedule doctor’s appointments and errands, you can and should schedule sex. Feeling like you’ve lost the spontaneity of your previous sex life can be difficult, but it’s worth it to maintain intimacy with your partner. Additionally, adjusting your mindset to view the entire day as foreplay and an opportunity to tease each other and get in the mood can help make things even more exciting!

Spend Time Together

One of the best ways to enhance intimacy with your partner is to spend time together without having sex at all. Making sure you find time for the physical is important, but it’s also important to just have and enjoy simple moments together, like some time spent cuddling after your children go to bed, a night out while the kids stay home with a babysitter, or a quick, fun conversation in the morning together before the day begins. Prioritizing nonsexual intimacy can make a big difference in your relationship.

While maintaining a healthy romantic and sexual relationship with your partner after you both become parents does take work, forethought, and cooperation, it is possible, and you’ll both be happier for it in the years to come! If you’re interested in learning more about reproductive health and wellness and hormonal imbalances, check out our blog here at Renewed Vitality!

Your hormones play a role in almost every function in your body, and if your levels are out of whack, it can have major impacts on your health. Hormones are the chemical messengers in the ecosystem of your body, so imagine if the messengers in our lives, like the news or the mail service, weren’t working like they were supposed to. It would cause chaos!

A hormone imbalance can affect your physical, mental, and emotional health, it’s common to find hormone imbalances in men and hormone imbalances in women. You might have trouble controlling your appetite or sleep if your hormones are out of balance, for example, or can leave you feeling lethargic or more depressed than usual. If you suspect you have a hormone imbalance, there are some simple lifestyle changes that you can consider making that will help you to get things back on track and feel better! Here are some natural remedies to help a hormone imbalance.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral, meaning that humans need it to be healthy. It’s found in foods like whole grains, dark, leafy vegetables such as kale or spinach, and legumes like beans or chickpeas. It’s also found in dark chocolate! Adding more of these foods to your diet can be a good way to help with magnesium levels, but many people take a supplement or use a magnesium spray or soak to absorb the mineral through their skin.

Upping your magnesium intake can help you balance your hormone levels, and it can also help you sleep better and reduce any muscle cramps you might be having.

Healthy Fats

Fat is a necessary part of any human diet, and consistently eating foods that are low in fat can be detrimental to your hormone levels. A hormone-healthy diet will contain plenty of healthy, nutritious fats like fish, avocados, nuts, and olive and coconut oils. Fats like these are called MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) and omega-3s, and they’re also good for your brain health!

B Vitamins

Essential vitamins for hormones like magnesium and B vitamins

There are eight different B vitamins in total, and they all have different jobs they do in the body. Making sure you take in your B vitamins can help you to deal with hormonal imbalances. You can take a B-complex supplement to help with this, but you can also get the B vitamins from your diet.

A lot of the usual vitamin-rich suspects show up here, like salmon and dark leafy greens. Eggs and nutritional yeast are also good choices, as well as sunflower seeds, beef, trout, shellfish, poultry, beans, and organ meats like liver.

Protein

Protein provides the body with amino acids, which are essential nutritional molecules that the body can’t make on its own. Some of your hormones are actually made of these amino acids, called the peptide hormones, and they help control things like growth, energy metabolism, appetite, stress, and reproduction.

High protein foods like eggs, chicken breast, lentils, or fish are important to include throughout the day. Not only will they help you feel fuller longer, they will help give your body the building blocks it needs to create other essential hormones that control your health and how you feel.

Making simple lifestyle changes like these that help balance your hormone levels can really improve how you feel and function throughout your day, but if you feel that the results you’re getting from these healthy choices are still not enough, it’s time to turn to the experts. A hormone replacement therapy center like Renewed Vitality can get you feeling better with bioidentical hormone treatments to help your body achieve the levels it needs.
